5 Types of Medicines to Keep in Your Medicinal Cupboard

Brian Kwetkowski

It’s pretty common for people to stock up on medicines they deem useful for emergencies. However, a lot of these medicines are either too specific to do any good, completely useless, or generally just not very effective. Here are the five variants of medicines you should actually keep.

Paracetamol

Despite this not being a type of medicine, it is indisputably the most important one you should keep with you at all times. Not only is it good for reducing general pains, but is also very effective in reducing fevers, and light headaches. Despite its obvious uses, it is important to keep the dose in hindsight since taking more than necessary causes more harm than good.

Antacids

If you’re someone prone to indigestion, constipation, or generally acidity, this is probably something you’re already accustomed to. Antacids are great for helping with issues relating to digestion by neutralizing the acid levels in your stomach. Though, it is important to consult a doctor before popping one in to make sure you have the right type of antacid for you.

Antiseptics

This is a no-brainer. Antiseptics are something you should have at hand at all times- especially if you’re prone to minor injuries. Antiseptics serve to disinfect open wounds and are essential to put on before bandaging them to prevent infections and other further complications.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines work wonders for general symptoms of allergies like runny noses, sneezing, constant itches, and watery eyes. They are also good to treat wasp and bee stings, making them a useful medicine to have on you. However, it is important to note that certain types may cause drowsiness and fatigue. It is, therefore, very important to make sure you’re either taking them before bed or get other daytime alternatives like loratadine.

General eye drops

If your allergic reactions tend to target the eyes, it’s a good idea to keep some eye drops on hand. Eye drops with antihistamines and decongestants do wonders to sooth itchy and watery eyes. For other symptoms like burning, inability to open etc. it is better to get a professional opinion before using them.

4 Popular Health Myths: Debunked

Brian Kwetkowski

All households have some common regulations regarding health and safety which aren’t exactly true. Be it eating less to weight, drinking more than eight glasses of water, or not cracking joints, these myths aren’t rooted in truth whatsoever. Let’s talk about a few of these.

Eating too many eggs leads to heart disease

As someone who is an avid breakfast lover, this myth used to make me incredibly sad. The myth comes from the cholesterol content in the yolk and is said to lead to higher risks of heart disease. However, having one or two eggs a day doesn’t do any harm, in fact, due to eggs being content rich with Omega-3s and other healthy vitamins; they can actually help lower the risk of heart disease.

Deodorant/anti-perspirants cause breast cancer

There’s a general misconception that some chemicals found in deodorants and anti-perspirants are linked to breast cancer and may be absorbed through the underarms. However, this absorbency myth was debunked and there has been no actual link between the chemicals and growth of tumors in breast tissue.

Drinking eight glasses of water a day is necessary

While the myth is well-intentioned, there isn’t much truth to it. Every person has different water requirements that may or may not be eight glasses. In fact, if you’re having more water-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, soups etc. they actually help in keeping your water content up and make you feel less thirsty. The only signs that you should drink more water are if your urine is a dark yellow/brown, you’re not urinating often, or if you are particularly active throughout the day.

Eating less in the long run helps to lose weight

A very common misconception, especially in diet culture, is that the quantity of what you consume affects your weight. While a shift in eating patterns does cause a minute change at first, this weight loss isn’t permanent and mostly water weight. In fact, eating less might actually make you gain weight since your body will stock up on carbs and fats to make up for the lack of nutrition.
